History of Bocce

Bocce is one of the world’s oldest known lawn games, with a history that stretches back thousands of years.  Versions of bocce were played as early as 5ooo BC in ancient civilizations, where people rolled rounded stories or carved balls toward a target.  Evidence suggests similar games existed in Egypt and the Middle East before spreading throughout the Mediterranean.

The game became especially popular in the Roman Empire.  Roman soldiers played it during downtime, using carved stones or coconuts, and helped spread the game across Europe.  The Roman name bottia, meaning balls us believed to be the root of the modern word bocce.

Modern bocce took shape in Italy during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.  It became a favorite pastime for people of all social classes.  Today bocce is played worldwide as both a casual social activity and a competitive sport.  It’s enduring appeal comes from it’s simplicity: easy to learn, playable by all ages, and perfect for relaxed outdoor fun.
